As the summer heat continues, our family is spending LOTS of time in the pool. Keeping my daughter and her friends safe is TOP priority when we're swimming, so we enrolled her in swim lessons earlier this summer.

Her swim instructor, Coach Dana Moser, is a complete genius when teaching kids water safety and swimming. I've been so impressed with her knowledge, creativity, and ease at keeping the children actively engaged for a full 30-minute lesson that I asked her to join me for a conversation about water safety.

Our interview covers LOTS of ground pertaining to swim safety and important things every parent should keep in mind when it comes to family outings near water.

Some of my favorite takeaways from our conversation were...

  • Don’t ever underestimate the power of your example as a parent.
  • If you want them to go underwater, you have to go underwater too!
  • Assessing danger and safety around new areas of water. Include children in that conversation. Talk about safe and dangerous areas.
  • Never EVER swim alone - regardless of age or experience level.
  • Respect children’s fear of water. Don’t encourage more fear by going against their wishes. Use natural consequences through play to help them overcome those fears.
  • Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation devices. (See video and link below for more details...)

Visit the Life Jacket Association for more information about life jacket labeling to keep your family safe.

This interview was packed with helpful tips from Coach Dana.
