Can you believe it’s already mid-October? We’re gearing up for spooky season, with Halloween just a couple of weeks away. You know what that means, right? Tons of photos from haunted houses, adorable costumes, and pumpkin-spiced everything flooding our social media feeds! But before you go uploading those precious pumpkin patch pics, I need to share a cautionary tale from my personal experience. [Tune-in to the full episode HERE!]

Let's rewind to December 2021. That evening, I clicked on my Facebook app to check notifications, as one does. Instead of my usual feed of adorable kiddo pics and fun updates, I was met with a gut-wrenching message: “Your password has been changed.” Insta-panic mode activated. I tried logging into Instagram—same story. Locked out. My heart sank through the floor.
No, this wasn't an internet glitch—both accounts had been hacked, and I couldn’t get back in them. Years of photos, videos, and messages...poof—gone. Talk about a digital nightmare. 🤯
This experience jolted me into reevaluating how we, as moms, store our family's beloved memories. Because let’s be honest, these platforms? They might not be the fortresses we think they are. Here’s why and what we can do instead.
Social Media: Not Your Digital Scrapbook
1. No Control: You might think you have your digital ducks in a row, but newsflash—you don’t own your space on platforms like Facebook or Instagram. Their policies and algorithms control what gets seen and what gets buried. Even scarier, if your account is flagged or reported (legitimately or not), access can vanish without a trace.
2. Zero Privacy Guarantee: It’s no secret that social platforms harvest personal data, but if your account gets hacked, it’s not just about the loss of photos—your private messages, location history, and more are up for grabs.
3. Temporary Nature: Remember MySpace? It was once the place to store memories, now it’s a digital ghost town. Social media platforms change constantly, and if they shut down tomorrow, those precious firsts—first steps, first words—could disappear.
Alternatives: Your Memory-Saving Safety Net
1. Cloud Storage: Think Google Photos, Dropbox, or Apple iCloud. These are designed to keep your photos safe and sound, backed up in the cloud. So if your device is a casualty of life (or sneaky toddlers), your memories are still intact. Plus, you can control who sees what, and your memories aren't lost in an endless social media vortex.
2. Physical Backups: Hello, nostalgia! There’s something timeless about holding a physical photo album. Print those favorite snaps, create albums, or even go full crafty with scrapbooks. Flip through them on family nights, and trust me, the experience is magical.
3. Private Sharing Platforms: Want to share moments without broadcasting them to the world? Family blogs, private group chats, or photo-sharing apps let you do just that. You get to control who sees your moments and can share them securely with only the people who matter most.

Keeping Your Digital Presence Secure
But if you’re married to the ‘Gram or still in a complex relationship with Facebook, let’s beef up that digital security, shall we?
1. Strong, Unique Passwords: Use different passwords across accounts. Simple, right? Wrong—but it’s essential. Password managers can help you keep your sanity and security. Remember, a hacker's dream is a reused password.
2. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This is your digital guardian angel. Even if someone nabbed your password, they’d need access to a secondary code sent to your phone or email. Two-factor authentication can thwart many would-be intruders.
3. Regular Account Monitoring: Check your account settings regularly. Subtle changes like email address tweaks can give hackers a leg up. Keep an eye out for anything fishy.
4. Family Education: Chat about digital safety with your loved ones, especially kids and older relatives. Keeping everyone informed makes the whole family less vulnerable to digital scares.
